10 years in the 602 (Chapter 5)

For the first week in Phoenix, we did what anyone in a new town would do - we walked and drove around to get a feel for it. Having come in from Florida (Boynton Beach), we noticed some differences right away:

• Weather: it was November, so it was cooler and less humid than Florida.
• Used pants: there were stores that were advertising to buy used Levis. We'd never seen such a thing in Florida.
• Polite motorists: if you passed someone a little to close in Miami (the Miami in Florida, not the one in Arizona), you were just as likely to get a middle finger as you were a handgun waved at you. Motorists seemed a lot more polite here.
• Jalapeños: jalapeños on just about everything. It wasn't exactly a staple in Florida.
• Dairy Queen: definitely the most popular place in Ahwatukee. We lived down the road from one, and it was always packed. We would always see eight or more cars waiting at the drive through.
