School's out for summer

I talked to my Dad tonight, and things are still a mess in Charlotte county after Hurricane Charley. School started on August 9th, Charley hit on August 13th, and the schools are still closed. Although some of the teachers and staff will be reporting in for work on Monday (the 23rd), Charlotte county schools won't open their doors until August 30th. Even then, eight schools will still be closed.
One school that will be closed for a while is Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda. Charlotte High School was built in 1926, and it was close to falling apart when I graduated from the "rival" high school, Port Charlotte High in '84. In the last few years, they spent millions to restore buildings there, in particular the "original" three-story building. After Charley came through, much of the third floor has collapsed and there is major roof damage. As for the rest of the campus, it's heavily damaged: roofs are gone, the stadium is trashed, and there's debris all over the place. The photo is courtesy of the Sun-Herald, Port Charlotte's hometown newspaper. The students at Charlotte High will start school at Port Charlotte High on the 30th - I guess the "rivalry" will be put on hold. The current principal, Barney Duffy, is quoted as saying "I’d rather have our house demolished than Charlotte High", and vows to provide his students with a homecoming and a prom. Barney (or as we called him at the time, "Mr. Duffy") was the assistant principal at Port Charlotte High when I attended. Mr. Duffy, if you're reading this, I wish you the best of luck. Oh, and I'm really sorry about that time I made those "unauthorized announcements" over the P.A. system...
