RF

This is one of two single-cell RF (Radio Frequency) cavities in the storage ring of the Advanced Light Source. The purpose of an RF cavity is to transfer energy from the klystron to the electron beam. This helps maintain the energy of the beam. The piping that you see (formed into an octagonal ring) is used for cooling - RF cavities get hot. The pipe you see exiting from the front of the RF cavity is the beampipe.
